Prior Authorization

The West Virginia Offices of the Insurance Commissioner enforces Prior Authorization Mandates on private commercial insurers as well as PEIA and Medicaid Managed Care.  In addition to making sure policy language is accurate, the Life and Health Division enforces the Gold Card Program for providers in WV.

Health insurers are required to submit quarterly data reports on Prior Authorization activity and a list of Gold Card Physicians to the Division.

2026 Quarterly Data Call
Senate Bill 267 (2023) updates the prior authorization statutes to require quarterly reporting to the WV Offices of the Insurance Commissioner.
